Had similar problems recently when trying to install on an old box and
it puzzled me. The crashing when installing was down to insufficient
memory, think I am right in saying the later versions of Linux need
about 60 Mb so they load into memory and if there is not enough they
get to a point where the install stops.
I sorted the problem by going back to an old version of
Slackware, needing less memory, and it went on without a problem, same
applied to an older version of SuSE.
Have you configured X using XF86config? It helps if you know your
monitor and hardware but if you start with the less ambitious values
and have several tries you should get it going. If there is a problem
when X starts you can always kill it quickly with CTRL ALT BCKSPACE
before you burn your screen. Again memory is an issue and if there is
not enough KDE won't run and you may be stuck with a basic window
manager like fvwm.
I am sure others will give you better advice but going back to two old
boxes, a desktop and old laptop were relearning exercises for me and I
hope this helps.
Regards
Graham
