I've just tried with Fedora Core 3 & NTL 750K broadband and the front page
came up pretty well as I'd expect, within a second.

Personally, with a Linux machine and a dialup connection, I wouldn't bother
with a firewall at all, assuming the Linux machine in question didn't
have particularly sensitive data or a business-critical function of some kind.

If you do want to use one though, and it IS the firewall that's causing the
problem, it's better to find out what's causing the jam and fixing it than
disabling it manually for a particular page.  If we can identify whether your
firewall is stopping the page from loading properly, although actually that
seems unlikely to me - then that would be a good start.  The shorewall config
files are fairly easy to follow and debug.
