[Sderby] suse 8.2 crashing

I have just finished installing suse 8.2 on my pc. The installation seems 
to have gone OK but I am having a problem. I am able to use some of the 
software (Konquerer, OpenOffice etc) but if I try to do anything with Yast2 
or a console window, change the configuration of (i.e) Konquerer or use 
some other software (Mozilla) the PC hangs. This is the same if I am logged 
on as user or root. My system is:
Athlon XP2400
Asrock K7S8XE mboard
Xabre 200 graphics card
512Mb 266mhz Ram (Kingston)
DVD drive
Plextor cd rewriter.
If anyone could give me any ideas or tell me how I might go about 
troubleshooting this it would be appreciated (Linux newcomer).
