This is using naim, which uses the firetalk library for its IRC
functionality.  I can connect using Mozilla Chat, but then I have to
faff about with SSH tunnelling and stuff....

That was my first instinct, but to no avail.  It can connect to
irc.cockos.com fine, so I got the old debugger and source code out and
had a poke around.  I submitted a patch to make it behave itself, but
the author wasn't keen on putting it in.

I wonder if I still have a copy of BitchX lying around....
