You've been editing /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 ? Hmm. According to ``man
xorg.conf'', that file isn't listed (although I seem to recall there
would have been some sort of upgrade mechanism - a symlink?). Anyway, I
would think you can just move everything to xorg.conf without side
effects - provided you really are using xorg and not xfree86 (i.e.
you've not dug out the Woody isos).

Come to think of it, I see that I misread what you were doing battle
with. I thought you were generating a config with the old xf86config(1):
http://www.xfree86.org/current/xf86config.1.html

If you hit debconf and dpkg-reconfigure hard enough, it can mostly
generate everything without problems (in my experience). You would want
to run it again if you changed to the binary-only nVidia drivers.
