Actually, the penny dropped after I hit "send". I'm using XFree86 not xorg. 
I see the xorg debs are part of the unstable packages. I configured this 
machine from the current netinst CD image so I don't know how it might have 
installed Woody stuff but I'm just going to have a go at installing the xorg 
files now. 

I'll see what becomes of it.
