Ask 10 experts and you'll get 20 different answers. It really boils down to 
what you are going to use the machine for. If you want to have a look at some 
specialised setups then www.howtoforge.com is a good place to start.

On all my desktop machines I have a /home partition, and everything else goes 
in the / partition.
