Ooops, I forgot to mention swap. Yes, I still go for 2xRAM as well.
With something as big as 80 GB, I'd tend to only format half of it, and then
you can add extra partitions as the need arises, so, say:
swap 1GB (assuming 512K of RAM)
/home 10GB
/ 29GB
This also gives you a bit of scope should you want to dual boot to other
distros. One point to bear in mind if you do this though is to be careful
when creating users. If you create a user 'jim' in ubuntu, his home directory
is automatically /home/jim. If you then install (say) Suse 10, you can create
a user 'jim' but you should make his home directory something
like /home/jim_suse. The reason being the user settings for one distro may be
slightly different for another, and you can end up screwing them both.
If you have any files you need to share, then create a directory that can be
accessed by both users (eg /home/documents).
My one complaint about Ubuntu is that you cannot specify the settings of the
default user at installation. You can in Fedora or SuSE.
