Since you already had XP we would have kept it simple with a small
50meg /boot and I'm not a fan of large swap space so I would have had
that pretty small (I go for half the RAM not 2x the RAM if the RAM is
1gig plus - depending on what the box is doing), then a good sized root.
Those partitions would have been 50meg for the /boot, 200meg for the
swap and 20gig for root. You said you wouldn't keep much files or stuff
as you were just messing about so having additional partitions wasn't of
any real use.

You need swap space and a /, Everything else is optional. I generally
only create partitions if I have a good reason, nothing worse than
having lots of space in /var but nothing in /home.
