I'd probably reverse the size of the / and /home partitions - I have a
fairly cluttered system, and my root partition looks like this:

Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda5             8.3G  6.5G  1.4G  83% /

and my home partition looks like this:

/dev/sda2              20G   17G  1.7G  91% /home

But it depends how much room you anticipate using on /home, really - I
have a /store partition (54gb) for all my assorted crap, too, and a
separate partition for virtual machines... ;)
