I gave up about half way through explaining what the 0x meant, what a
pointer is, what type casting is... ;)

Indeed.  I asked her to give an example of why she would want to do an
update to a memory address directly in the first place.  She indicated that
it was a good way of putting cheats into games.

...something tells me that the games industry has moved on a little since
the early 80's.  

Frankly the fact that a language like BASIC ever got near memory management
was a clear indicator of how poor the hardware was, not how great the
language was.
