Just a quick one to say thanks to all of you who made me feel welcome at the
"moot" last night. Very pleasing to finally put some faces to the names.

Also further to Steve's quest for some more basic input to the list from
"lurkers",

Swap Memory.

From what I can sus out, historically, a linux system used to have "swap" at
about the same as the system ram?

I installed the harddrive and managed to get it going (to my embarassment) by
throwing my xp "recovery" disc in and booting/installing. I then installed
Partition magic 8 and chopped the disc into 2 bit's (40 gig for xp and 80 gig
for linux - seemed like a good idea at the time), I also recall that PM8 can
format "linux swap".

In my ignorance, I presumed that installing mandrake would do this for me, so
to check i have done

Sorry, It went on forever. Anyhow, most of this is "greek" to me but I don't
see anything that mentions "swap memory" (though it might be mentioned in
"greek" somwhere?)

The point being, with 768 megs of physical memory, Do I actually need to have
swap memory? and if so, how would I achieve this?

regards

John D.
