Solved that one in the end, turned out I needed too start the kernel with acpi=off due to some kind of bug with the livecd.  I'm using an Abit AT7-MAX, but my friend with a KR7-A had the exact same problem with the exact same solution.  Hopefully it will be fixed soon.

Gentoo is all up and running now though, so much easier now I actually know what I'm doing.  I have to say I'm in love with Gnome2.2 - great to use and looks stunning.

A long time and rather a lot of glue later my hair is almost as good as new, you can hardly tell from the front.
