Greetings Port Pickers, and welcome to the weekly edition of SLUGS: The
Apt Generation.

This is my thread, and these are my words. And if you dont like them
then ... BYTE me !

So where did we come from and how did we get there....

Well Steve taught Geoff and thing or too about libraries and stopped
Geoff from going insane. A lesson here to be learnt is now thy libraries
and grep thy function calls!

http://mailman.lug.org.uk/pipermail/sussex/2003-February/001604.html

And we continued to discuss the history and detractors that were famous
people and their influences on the course of computing history

http://mailman.lug.org.uk/pipermail/sussex/2003-February/001605.html

Im not sure if many of you are like me in thinking that geoff has a copy
of the complete history of computers, software and their creators which
he got for christmas.

[
Fezzik: You never said anything about killing anyone!
Vizzini: I've hired you to help me start a war! It's an prestigious line
of work, with a long and glorious tradition.
Fezzik: I just don't think it's right, killing an innocent girl.
Vizzini: Am I going MAD, or did the word "think" escape your lips?! You
were not hired for your brains, you hippopotamic LAND MASS!
]

Short mention was made of an appreciation of signatures and their
history, it went no further ... but if you like my sigs and want to know
how I achieve them then look at sigmonster.

[
Earl Bassett: We gotta run. We've got a schedule to keep.
Valentine McKee: Yeah. See, we plan ahead, that way we don't do anything
right now. Earl explained it to me.
]

Andrew pitched in on monday with a reall technical support question.

http://mailman.lug.org.uk/pipermail/sussex/2003-February/001607.html

Hmm 3IP addresses for one machine... heck and it was IIS at that ...
What intersted me was who was nik@*.com who uses splat.com anyway. Come
to that what do you call the '*' symbol ? is it splat, star, asterisk,
shift-8.

Adam later in the day claimed to be loosing his hair, and all because
Gentoo at rc2 was not letting him at his card. Hmm Davicom Cards..
Personaly I rate them right up their with D-Link, SMC and netgear but I
guess someone is going to buy them <grin>

http://mailman.lug.org.uk/pipermail/sussex/2003-February/001610.html

Speaking of hardware, Steve Geoff and others chipped in with a
Recruitment Agents Dream... a well structured and clearly defined
history or buzzwords and platforms all of which demonstrate experience
and projects worked on , I should not I never posted my self... im Sorry
but there aint enough bandwidth to cover my experience <REALLY BIG WINK
OF THE EYE>

http://mailman.lug.org.uk/pipermail/sussex/2003-February/001611.html

[
Randal Graves: My mom's been fuckin' a dead guy for 30 years. I call him
dad.
]

By Tuesday , Andrew was back, Spare IPs aside he wanted more details
about GPRS and Nokias.

http://mailman.lug.org.uk/pipermail/sussex/2003-February/001616.html

Seems it really is possible to make your laptop use the GPRS as a modem.
NOt that I ever succeeded in doing this on my 7650. But apparently its
quite cool!

of course this headed off into a whole BlueTooth comment, Bluetooth?
Where did anyone come up with that name? and why bluetooth? Personally I
like the idea of GummiBear Networking. Its small cuddly can interelate
with a variety of platforms and mixes well!

[
Fabrizio: In Sicily, women are more dangerous than shotguns.

]

Speaking of recruitment agents ( see earlier, or page up whatever!)
Geoff hit the list with a interesting Job Opportunity.

http://mailman.lug.org.uk/pipermail/sussex/2003-February/001633.html

But did anyone follow up ?

[
Hooper: I'm not going to waste my time arguing with a man who's lining
up to be a hot lunch.
]

By Thursday Geoff had popped into WHSMith, and spotted Yet Another Linux
Magazine(c), seems Future Publishing are really pushing out the Linux
boat this time

http://mailman.lug.org.uk/pipermail/sussex/2003-February/001640.html

Now the thing about linux magazines is that usually I will , even if
subscribed, buy a few extra copies from the shelf when spare and hand
them out or pass them on or generally keep aside to use as presenters in
sales meetings and briefings. This particular one however was a little
sparese at the local smiths so I felt it approrpriate to leave for a
more deserving purchaser. My copies of Linux user are spread far and
wide. In the meantime though how many of you use this tactic to promote
linux ?

[
Young Robert: Well... it was something he said.
Imaginary William Shatner: What'd he say?
Young Robert: You really don't want to know.
Imaginary William Shatner: I really do want to know!
Young Robert: He said that Han Solo was cooler than Captain Kirk.
[Pause]
Imaginary William Shatner: Kick the little fucker's ass

]

Thursday also saw the release of the new improved SLUGS web page. Now
with adult verification systems and free tour.. No wait thats the other
sites!

http://mailman.lug.org.uk/pipermail/sussex/2003-February/001660.html

I like the layout and look forward to posting many more useful articles
( than this one ! ). The new layout certainly loads quicker and make
more sense, lets just hope with the shared update responsiblilty we can
carry forward the ability to inform and educate people about precisely
when in the Month is the last thursday. Which leads to an interesting
competition:

In your favourite language[1] write a algorith to calculate the date of the
last working thursday in the month. This may be used to keep the site
updated !

[

Colonel Mustard: Well, there is still some confusion as to whether or
not there is anybody else in this house.
Wadsworth: I told you there isn't!
Colonel Mustard: There isn't any confusion, or there isn't anbody else?
Wadsworth: Either, or both!
Colonel Mustard: Just give me a clear answer!
Wadsworth: Certainly!
[clears his throat]
Wadsworth: What was the question?
Colonel Mustard: Is there anybody else in the house!
All: NO!!!

]

Friday rolled around, and Geoff began the lament for the BIOS,
apparently were not going to get the opportunity to press the del key
during POST to enter the BIOS configuration screen. Which is a shame
cause I really enjoyed playing Whack-A-Mole with the keyboard trying to
guess at what point I was being prompted to configure the BIOS cause the
power save monitor wont warm up fast enough !

Andrew chimed in with problems posting to AOL from a server. The real
question should be why would anyone want to talk to a AOL account user ?

http://mailman.lug.org.uk/pipermail/sussex/2003-February/001670.html

Friday Geoff reminded us that there was a meeting coming up, see thats
the nice thing about February, it makes a nice little 4 week month which
for those of us more mentally challenged makes it easy to work out the
last thursday in the month.

http://mailman.lug.org.uk/pipermail/sussex/2003-February/001672.html

[
Maximillian Cohen: 12:50, press Return.
]

AG, (? Niall ?) asked a short question about Samba and permissions and
problems there in

http://mailman.lug.org.uk/pipermail/sussex/2003-February/001679.html

Only nobody answered it, so for all I can know he still has problems !

[
Pinocchio: I'm not a puppet! I'm a real boy!
[nose grows]
Captain of Guards: Five schillings for the possessed toy. Take it away!

Ending the Week Iain Stevenson pointed out that USB Bluetooth devices
are going cheap. Which personally is wierd cause all mine go beep!

http://mailman.lug.org.uk/pipermail/sussex/2003-February/001686.html

Still I wonder why all this bluetooth is so interesting , im still
trying to get my WI-FI seperates from Richer Sounds ( networking
division ).

Um . so thats it really . We came , we saw , we did a little shopping.
Bluetooth has been the topic dejour most of the week, apart from the
ongoing thread regarding whom programs in what and the smaller storm in
the D cup.

Here ends my rant, rave and reconnociance for the week.

Ive been told a few of you are now waiting till the end of the week in
order to catch up and see what happened this week. What can I say im
touched[3] but its better if you all get involved in the week and say
something about what we are all saying.

On another note, I finished Splinter Cell today. Its taken two months
and at least 48+ hours of gameplay. Next to Halo id have to say this is
a impressive and immersive game! See Microsoft really do make the best
operating system for playing games on !

Ok im off, have a good week people .
