Just to clarify, there is _no_ default kernel in Gentoo... you pick which
one you want to use and compile it, however, the LiveCD's do have some
generic builds that will be based around the most recent release of the 2.4
series kernel.
Moving to a 2.5 (2.6 soon) kernel in Gentoo is simply a matter of emerging
the kernel you want from the extensive list in /usr/portage/sys-kernel/,
building it in the normal way, installing and adjusting your bootloader.
If it isn't in /usr/portage/sys-kernel then you can always download it
seperately, it just means it isn't being officially maintained by a Gentoo
developer and therefore there are no guarantees!
