Mark,

Frankly there a _lot_ better options than MySQL out there - MySQL is 
popular because it _used_ to be fast  - now it is slower, still feature 
poor and exists under a license which is not truely Free (in the FSF 
sense).  PostgreSQL is probably the _best_ general purpose RDBMS 
supplied as Free Software.  The former Interbase is also a good piece of 
technology.

Another option, if your looking for a file based database then SQLite 
could be a good place to look - I discovered it recently and it's just 
great for any application where you don't want a seperate database 
server.  It's incredibly fast and pretty powerful.
