Gareth,

Tony is right, the GRP discs are probably best.  Trying to download the
portage distfiles as they exist on a Gentoo mirror is a bad idea - our
mirror here at work currently runs in excess of 22GB!  (On the upside it
means you can do the GRP install of OpenOffice.org 1.1 on our local
network in 12 seconds ;)
