Or if you are running kernel 2.6.x just go and get a new (patched) 
version of cdrecord and forget about ide-scsi.  Then you can use 
cdrecord thus:

cdrecord dev=/dev/hdd speed=8 -eject myiso.iso

.. assuming your cdwriter is /dev/hdd and it supports 8x writing...
