Firstly, sorry for the wrong post (the only bit's I've snipped out are
my horrendous typo's plus the parts that even I can recognise as totally
irrelevant) and thanks Nik and Jon Fautley for the additional suggestions.
So, this is what I did, and have made a nice shiny coaster :(

Obviously, because of the

bit, some of the files are missing.
What I didn't follow, was that even though the original downloaded ISO
for the pclinuxos was reported as being 683.9 megs, it appears that the
one that was made/converted/cocked up ?? is reported as being 762.5 and
that's obviously the one that cdrecord has used for the burn.
So should I have actually done the
> # mkisofs -o pclinuxos-1130.iso -R -J /home/john/tmp
command, or should I have just proceeded from the
> cdrecord -v -overburn dev=0,0,0 pclinuxos-1130.iso
stage (without the -overburn option)?
I'm presuming that cdrecord used the larger image, because that's the
one that ended up in my home directory (whereas the original downloaded
one is in /tmp) and that because it reported as "oversized" it told me
to use the -overburn option (god, I wish there was an emoticon for
"scratching my head in confusion").
