[Sussex] vim/terminal weirdness

When I'm using vim in insert mode, the up key prints 'A' on a new line, down
'B', right 'C' and left 'D'. This gets really really annoying (I know I could
use h,j,k,l but I still use arrow keys without thinking) :)

It works fine in ssh to another box, so that would suggest it's not X, but
that it's probably something to do with the local vim setup. I think it's
something to do with termcap, but I have no idea how I would fix it. It's my
laptop running Slackware 9.1. Anyone have any troubleshooting tips I could
use to pinpoint the problem?

Any help would be appreciated before it drives me mad :)
