hdparm is great for improving read/write access but yes, it does come
with quite a few warnings. for examples and how to use it, su and then
issue the following command:
# man hdparm
it will give you a list of uses and tell you what to watch out for too.

I got quite a few, my read/write times sped up by about 300 miliseconds
(I didn't have any DMA enabled to begin with!) so my advice is play and
see what you get.
