[Sussex] Bloody Gnome problems

My Gnome desktop has gone boobs up.   After screensavers running in 
random mode exited, the screen fragmented.  So I managed to get the 
taskbar open and reboot.  Now, even though Gnome starts and the desktop 
itself shows, the taskbars fail to start.  All I get are two brown areas 
at the top and bottom, where the taskbars should be.

I've tried booting in "safe" mode to no avail.

Any chance that someone could help?

Re-installation could be an option I suppose.
