Just some ideas......
 
You mentioned setting your card to use ad-hoc, have you tried it in
"infrastructure" mode instead? Isn't adhoc more for using between 2 wifi
cards/devices without the use of an AP between them?
 
How much attention have you given to the wireless settings in the router, as
opposed to the client card settings? You don't have only a limited IP range
available, or any MAC filtering on do you?
I'm not familiar with your router/model. Are you running Linux firmware on
it?
 
Are you sure you haven't inadvertantly set up dhcp server (rather than
client) on your laptop too, so they are both trying to *serve up*? (I'm
still worried about this use of AdHoc)
 
Do you have access to another laptop/pda/whatever to test your card/router
with?
 
Again, I'm sorry if you are already well past these sort of checks etc, I'm
trying to think of some ideas & may be starting way behind where you already
are!?
