I know other have replied, but I'll just restate clearly:

The default installation of Ubuntu sets up the first user (added as part 
of the installation) as a "sudoer".

You can use sudo to run commands with root privalleges, and if you 
really need to become root simply do a:

sudo su -

.. the first time you use sudo in a session it will prompt you for a 
password - this password is your normal users password, not a root 
password (Ubuntu doesn't have a root password).
