Indeed. The first thing I did when I got my first proper Linux install
was to recompile the kernel (I'm ignoring a brief play with Caldera here
that got curtailed by the requirement to install NT 4 to do some SQL
server development). I had token ring network cards in my machine, so it
was a necessity back then! A bit of a baptism by fire really!!

I keep meaning to take a look at Gentoo, just not getting the time :(
