This sounds like X server is not detecting/setting monitor modes
correctly when the server starts. Depending on whether your friend has
Knoppix installed or booted from CD, the fix is slightly different in
either case.

If Knoppix is installed, he should be able to tweak the X server config
file to correct the problem. If booting from CD, he should be able to do
the same by using the 2 or 3 option at boot time to start in console
mode, edit the necessary file and then startx.

If I remember correctly, Knoppix Live CDs also have an option to set a
monitor refresh rate at boot time. I've just downloaded the 4.0.2 DVD
ISO image. I'll have a play with it and come up with more detailed
suggestions later.

If anyone would like a Knoppix 4.0.2 DVD, or the ISO images, please let
me know.
