[Sussex] Fedora kernel modules / modprobe question

I am new to Fedora and 2.6 kernel and I can't figure out how to control
which modules load at boot time.  I've read the man pages for modprobe and
modprobe.conf but I still don't get it.

I want to stop some modules loading at boot, but the same ones always seem
to be there when I run lsmod.  I have tried renaming both the files
/etc/modules.conf and /etc/modules.conf.dist but all the modules seem to
load anyway.

Where do I need to look for the list of modules to load at boot?
