Can't help you with synergy, but perhaps an alternative method
altogether?
I've had good luck with installing vnc on the windows clients, and then
using x2vnc from my laptop.
It's a bit like x2x, and really freaks out the windows users: I just let
my mouse (connected to the laptop) go above the laptop screen, and it
appears at the bottom of the windows box.
