Oops! Sorry! Ignore the last post - you've done the mysqladmin thing
already have you?

mysql -u root -pmypassword -h 127.0.0.1
or
mysql -u root -pmypassword -S /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock
Also check the permissions on /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock. You need to be
able to read / write to it.
