[Sussex] Phpmyadmin

I have just installed the latest English version of Phpmyadmin on a Fedora Core 6 system. The I log in, via phpmyadmin, I get "The mbstring PHP extension string wasn't found and you seem to be using a multibyte charset. Without the mbstring extension phpMyAdmin is unable to split strings correctly and
it may result in unexpected results." I searched and found that the recommendation was to:
            yum search mbstring

            yum install php-mbstring.i386

I did this and rebooted but the problem persists. There are a number of references to mbstring in the php.ini file. Any suggestions as to what I should do to overcome the problem. Thanks, Brendan
