There are some big differences between KDE and Gnome. On of the
criticisms of Gnome is that it is not as configurable as KDE. While I
am not certain I don't think you can arrange the icons in any other way
that using the "Clean Up by Name" option on the desktop menu.

When unpacking an archive it is best to create a new folder first and
then unpack into that just to be sure.
