Steve,
When I first started using Linux I found a book called, something like,
"Linux for Windows users" but I seem to remember that it wasn't much
use! I found that many reference books are out of date and often
inaccurate - I use Fedora and have found "Fedora 6 and Red Hat
Enterprise Linux" buy Christopher Negus (Published by Wiley) to be
useful. My advice is to solve one problem at a time and write yourself a
brief note so if you encounter the same thing again you know what to do.
