Hi Gary!

Glad to hear that there's this sort of business in the Valleys ;-)

Probably the best way to find out if your software runs under WINE would
be to setup a WINE machine, and try it out. According to the
applications database on the WINE website (http://www.winehq.com) ...

o Dreamweaver 6 / MX does run, but needs the commercial Crossover
Office version of Wine (costs $55 per seat)
o Photoshop 6 runs for some people under Crossover Office, but there's
plenty of reports of problems
o Illustrator sort of works under Crossover Office, but printing is
reported as a major problem
o InDesign has no success stories posted. Most likely because it's a
pretty rare application?

Looks like you'll need $220 to equip all four machines with Crossover
Office, and then your apps won't work as well as your staff are already
used to :( There are other ways to run Windows apps under Linux - such
as VMware - but they are expensive to buy, and you still need a legit
copy of Windows too.

Sorry. Unless you can replace all your Windows apps, I'm not sure that
Linux can help your particular financial headache. Perhaps others on
the list can recommend suitable replacements?

Best regards,
Stu

PS: I used to have ISDN at home. I upgraded to ADSL as the recurring
costs worked out cheaper for me than ISDN 24x7. Oh yeah, and the extra
bandwidth is very nice too.

PPS: I'm an experienced UNIX admin, and can always pop over to help out
with any Linux problems that anyone local has. Or people can pop round
to my place for a cup of tea and a chat.

Hi Stu.

I'm from Pontypridd and quite coincidentally I was about to ask a
general
question to everyone on the list.

I have just bought a new-media/web design company in Pontypridd. I
bought it
as a going concern, and I need now to think about software licencing - a
major financial headache for me. The office has 4 networked desktop
machines, ISDN line for Internet access shared on one machine acting as
a
server.

I am thinking of implementing a Linux distro for all the desktops,
cutting
my Windows licencing at a stroke. However, the designers need and use
Macromedia Dreamweaver for HTML/ASP development, Photoshop 7 for
imagery,
Illustrator 10 for Vector graphics and Adobe Idesign for DTP work. I
would
guess that we could use open source software for all our other
requirements
(Office, scanning etc.)

My questions are, could I either run these essential products in Linux
under
WINE or similar, or can anyone suggest open source alternatives, and if
it
looks viable does anyone on the list offer a service to install and
configure Linux on these machines for me. (I would assume that Mandrake,
Redhat or Susie would be best) for a fee of course!

Sorry its long-winded

Best wishes

Gary
