Hi Gareth, 
If you follow the following link, you'll find the most
knowlegable group on NT4. Personally, I've never
experienced the problems you seem to be having. I run
NT4 SP6a on a P120 laptop (it chugs along with about
64MB). In fact, I haven't even had a crash yet.
