[SWLUG] Ancient sb card under Red Hat 9

I can't get sound working under Red Hat 9 on my daughter's (oldish) PC.
The RH9 install seemed to go smoothly.
On the first boot after install, RH found the card & offered to configure it,
so I clicked the "Configure" button. But see logfile extract below.
Unfortunately, no sound comes out when I play an audio CD. If I tick Sound
For Events in the Gnome Control Centre, I thereafter get a very faint burp
occasionally e.g. when closing a window. So something is happening somewhere.
(In the old days, I used to use /sbin/pnpdump, then uncomment some lines in
/etc/isapnp.conf, and this got things working. But these things don't seem
to exist anymore.)
Can anyone tell me whether there's a simple way of sorting this out? Or
should I just go an buy a cheap PCI card?
Thanks,
Gareth
