My penny's worth says:
Decent inkjets are cheaper to maintain and cheaper to
run as long as you buy the cartridges in bulk and buy
non-branded cartridges.
Colour cartridges are expensive but if it's just black
then they're usually cheaper. Some printers like the
HP 600c (I think) have the option of having a big
black cartridge as opposed to a 4-colour cartridge.
The sole advantage of laser is that it's non-water
soluable. if you plan to print envelopes then inkjet
isn't a good idea (I use window envelopes to solve
this problem).
Choice of printer is largely determined by what you
want out of it. A photo printer for colour photos, for
example. Colour lazerjets just aren't good enough yet
to do colour photos. Need a minimum of 1200 dpi for
photos.
Some HPs eg 900c (I think) can do 22ppm in black.
That's faster than most lazers and cheaper too. I
considered replacing my Epson Stylus 400 Colour as
it's about 45 seconds per page for text. Then I said
"it works. Why buy another".
