I used to use e-smith but I now run my own personal machine as the router. I 
know I shouldn't really but I'm ultra paranoid so I keep a tight eye on it. 

I've just done the MTU change (which I must admit never crossed my mind to 
try) and I'll see how it behaves. As I said its not life-or-death - just one 
of the only issues I've got with SuSe ! And considering its pretty minor I 
don't mind...
