But latest news. The DNS is responding

SME does indeed use Samba.

SME can be set to permit access solely from certain IP
addresses/ranges. I've set it to permit access solely
from 192.168.40.11/12/13/14 as these are the static
IPs of my other computers.

I still cannot browse folders on the Linux box from XP
without using IE FTP which makes access somewhat
restrictive.
