This may be a little out of date now, as i havent used LILO in years,
GRUB is much more useful in emergencies.

LILO uses the bioses own routines to load the kernel, those routines
cannot read past the first 1024 cyclinders in order to boot the kernel.
Once the kernel has booted it doesnt matter.

you should always put a small /boot partition near the beginning of the
disk, 20-30Mb is enough, that will contain the lilo config and kernel.
the distribution would have done this for you, but im guessing you did
it all manually instead.

This used to be a bigger problem before LBA mode came along, then disks
got much bigger and it broke again, now i think LBA32 fixes it, but that
may well break again at some particular disk size point.
