Temporarly, unplug ubuntu, take it to cable modem, plugin cable modem, 
just works if you use ethernet well my dad's did, though it was set up 
with it in there, so you might need to config it. Turn on ubuntu box, 
update and upgrade and install, take ubuntu box back home and but xp box 
back on cable, or leave ubuntu on there as it can handle networking 
quite well. Alternativly invest in a cheep and cheerful wifi AP with a 
USB card that you can move between different machines (if cost is an 
issue, as i know it is for me!!)
