The servers might be there to install, if you want them.  A browse of the 
packages on the Ubuntu 4.10 install disk reveals servers and clients for 
Apache2, Samba, SSH and (client at least) for FTP.  

But my mythical 'ordinary PC user' probably wouldn't want the servers 
anyway. 

We all know that Linux can hold its own against MS in the server 
market.  Its the stranglehold on the desktop market that needs to be 
broken.
