I bit the bullet last night and reinstalled.

Yes I spotted that one ;)  That's the very reason I keep it on a
separate partition.  Once bitten twice shy.

However *now* having reinstalled the trackpad doesn't want to play.
Curiously the keyboard does - it's usually both or neither.  It did
work previously with no special settings.  Mind you I do recall this
problem before.  Then it just went away mysteriously.  I knew that
would be a menace in the future!

That's a major pain in the neck as I need that to set-up the
wireless.  OK strictly speaking I don't *need* it (all you CLI addicts
stop tutting ;))  but it's a damn sight easier with it working.
