[SWLUG] Hello SWLUG

Hey there, and welcome to SWLUG.

My distro of choice would be Suse 10.1 - its even working great on my
laptop. Ive found it to be far more proffessional than other distro's
aimed at desktop users.

Ubuntu was a dissapointment for me - even worse on a dial up connection.
The way software doesnt come with the cd's means it needs to be
downloaded from repositories - just not viable on dial up.

Since being in America for 3 months, I have seen a better reception for
Linux than I did in Britain. Everyone i've spoken to, who have even used
a computer, seem to have seen Linux in the "flesh" before. It was a nice
surprise to see a freely accessible pc in an internet cafe, running
Gentoo, with a nice browser homepage advertising exactly what it is,
where to get it, and so forth. Not to mention that a number of people
here havent been fearful of trying something different, so spreading
Suse around has been easy (currently 4 people running a non dual-boot
Suse 10.1 system without problems). Back to Ubuntu, people found its
6.06 theme to be somewhat annoying in a way (although its not a
difficult task to change the theme).

Although, depends on your usage. I found Suse alot easier for pretty
much any media format, after a source compile of xine-lib - Ubuntu
seemed to go wrong somewhere in the same process. But for alot of other
things, Ubuntu is a friendly, compatible distro - just dont have a slow
connection.
