Have you looked at Picasa (a google app, it runs on linux via an integrated 
WINE system (ie not your native WINE)). It has a batch processing mode. Be 
advised I've only used this on Win XP and not the Linux version. In Slackware 
I use Gwenview (see later below).

One of the option for corrections is "i feel lucky" which corrects contrast 
and colour (or you can correct either).

Now I've never found it's best guess at color correction to be great (on 
screen at least, it may be my monitor settings, I'd try printing the output 
if that is your final goal - especially if you're using the gimp as the RGB 
internal colors won't translate directly to the CMYK of the printer).

Gwenview has a batch mode that looks to be easy to use (Plugins > Batch 
Processing). Haven't used it as, like I said, I use Picasa for that sort of 
thing.

Other tools like Krita (part of Koffice I think) that can use CMYK properly 
(!) might be better to script, Krita is scriptable in python and ruby. YMMV.
