A few things to check:

- Can you connect ok between XP and Linux? Check ipconfig/ifconfig for
IP addresses and ping between them. Make sure your firewall is
disabled if you get no response and try again.
- Make sure Linux/XP have IPs allocated to their interfaces. There are
most likely in the form 192.168.x.x
- If either of the two above fail it sounds like it could be a local issue.
- If they are ok try different DNS servers on your Linux box
(208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220  are for OpenDNS which is very
reliable).
