Sorry for not responding sooner, been a bit busy with my diss.

Basically like any PC problem where the answer isn't readily apparent you need 
to test each part of the PC/network ruling things out bit by bit.  In this 
case you need to get hold of some test equipment, that would be the ideal 
situation.  So new/known good cables, router and microfilter.  It's worth 
checking to see if you can ping from one PC to another on the local network, 
also can you ping the router?  Try running a traceroute to say google.com, see 
where it times out on each PC.  Also worth just connecting the linux box on 
it's own to see if it's config issue with the linux box. 

If you need test equipment, I may be able to help.  Post any traceroutes, 
network layout diags to the list and I'll do what I can to help.

What you're experiencing sounds to me like a config issue on your network.  I'm 
sure it's totally fixable.
