[SWLUG] Recompiling kernel any pitfalls?

To try and solve my problem with a network card it has been suggested to 
me that I recompile a special version of the Kernel.
Mandriva won't recognise the card but Knoppix will.

I haven 't done this before. Are there any pitfalls to watch for? Also I 
have googled around for info but if there are any particularly good 
sites and
sets of guidelines out there that people know about I'd be grateful to 
know about them.
