[Swlug] What's causing this system freeze and is it fixable?

Well, that's interesting. A new development. I tried putting in a new Sandisk USB memory stick because I was going to follow Keith's suggestion about downloading memtest86+. It objected to the memory stick which is strange because the memory stick I've been using to transfer the novel I'm writing between laptops worked well last thing last night and worked in my other laptop this morning. 
I tried a couple of fresh memory sticks and even one that has a bootable installation of Mint. I got the same message...Unable to mount <memory stick>Error creating mount point /media/rhys/ <memory stick>Read only file system.
I have not tried SSH. I'd have to use VNC instead as my other laptop's wifi card won't work under Raspbian Buster and my only other methods of remote access would be either my Android phone (which is on its last legs) or my Ipad Mini2. Not sure how to get into this laptop with VNC - I've only ever used VNC with my Raspberry Pi.
