OK. Egg on face! I don't know what the problem was before BUT I plugged the GPS mouse in and ran GPS.py and got a great output stream from the mouse on my car laptop. Maybe I had not waited long enough for it to pick up a GPS signal.
That's working so now I can work on the Python code.
