There used to be a thing called Matchbook which let you buy the Kindle
versions either free or heavily discounted. They still do the same for
Kindle / Audible, just not Physical / Kindle.

I assume in this case it's the publishers, rather than Amazon - they're
usually pretty keen to do anything that ties people into the Kindle.
